General Guidelines

The focus of Lou Lit Review is on place-based works of experience.

Submissions are welcomed via Submittable. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable and encouraged. For fiction especially, if your work is accepted elsewhere (congratulations!), please withdraw it from Submittable.

For poetry, there is no need to withdraw your submission unless multiple poems have been placed elsewhere. You always have the option to decline a contract. If you feel you must notify us, please send us a note via Submittable.

Please do not submit work that has been published in print or online. This includes but is not limited to work appearing in other journals, newspapers, magazines, or publicly accessible blogs.

We publish the hard copy magazine once a year, starting in Spring 2018. As work is accepted, it may be published online prior to print publication.

Submissions are open January 1 – October 31 (closed November and December).

We read everything over the winter and summer breaks so response times are typically 6 months, but occasionally may be as long as 7-8 months. Fiction currently has a longer turnaround time than poetry. Please feel free to query after 6 months by logging into your Submittable account and sending us a note from the system.

When you submit your work, we take that as an indication you’re interested in Lou Lit and our work, so we will add your email to our mailing list. We send a monthly newsletter, and once in a while an extra email, but we do our best not to overload in-boxes, and of course you are free to unsubscribe at any time.

If your work is accepted for publication, please refrain from submitting again for a year.

For Poetry

Send four to five poems in ONE file (.doc, .docx only).

For Flash Fiction

  •     We are open to both mimetic and speculative fiction.
  •     Our main criterion is the excellence of the story.
  •     Works of fiction up to 1,200 words (.doc and .docx, only).
  •      Please do not combine multiple submissions in one file.

For Visual Art

We are currently not accepting submissions for visual art.

Rights and Payment

We cannot offer cash payment at this time. This is something
we would like to build up to. At this time, payment for accepted
work is one copy of the journal.

We request First North American Rights on works we publish.
